Trump Tariffs Drive Crypto Investors to Stablecoins & RWAs Amid Market Uncertainty
Cryptocurrency investors are increasingly shifting capital into stablecoins and tokenized Real World Assets (RWAs) as they brace for potential market volatility following the anticipated tariff announcement by US President Donald Trump on April 2nd. This move reflects a growing desire for safe haven assets amidst heightened geopolitical tensions and concerns over global trade.
Flight to Safety: Stablecoins and RWA Inflows
According to crypto intelligence platform IntoTheBlock, both stablecoins and RWAs are experiencing consistent capital inflows. While residing on-chain, even minor shifts in sentiment can lead to significant price movements due to the ease of reallocating capital in real-time. This highlights the sensitivity of these assets to market news and investor confidence.
Senior research analyst at IntoTheBlock, Juan Pellicer, explains that initial expectations of economic benefits following Trump’s inauguration have been replaced by caution due to escalating geopolitical tensions, tariffs, and overall political uncertainty. Global growth forecasts, while still positive, have decreased in recent months, further fueling this cautious approach.
Market Performance & Impact of Tariffs
The prospect of a global trade war has intensified inflation concerns, leading to declines in both cryptocurrency and traditional equity markets. Bitcoin has fallen 19% and the S&P 500 index has dropped over 7% since January 20th, when Trump announced import tariffs on Chinese goods. The April 2nd announcement is expected to detail reciprocal trade tariffs targeting top US trading partners, aiming to reduce the country’s $1.2 trillion goods trade deficit and boost domestic manufacturing.
Iliya Kalchev, dispatch analyst at Nexo, notes that risk appetite remains muted due to these tariff threats and ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty.
RWA Growth & Potential
Real World Assets (RWAs) reached a new all-time high of over $17 billion on February 3rd and are currently less than 0.5% away from surpassing the $20 billion milestone, according to data from RWA.xyz. Some industry observers predict that RWAs could reach a $50 billion all-time high before the end of 2025, driven by increased liquidity and the potential to attract a significant share of the $450 trillion global asset market.
This shift towards RWAs suggests a growing interest in bridging the gap between traditional finance and the blockchain, offering investors access to a wider range of asset classes and potentially higher returns.
